- How do you think a black president will affect the state of race relations in our country? For better, worse or of no effect?
- Will it help the poor, urban black community (especially at-risk young black men) to think bigger/aspire higher than they may have before?
- Does it make a difference that his father was a Kenyan migrant vs. having roots as a 17-19th century slave?

Our First African-American President?
So, with the election looming and all polls pointing to the probability that we'll have our first African-American president, I have been wondering...

I think that in the long run having a minority president will have a positive impact on race relations in America. We will become a different country (our story will be different) if we elect a minority president.
I think the impact on poor black men will depend on how much an Obama administration tries to identify with that segment of the population. It is possible that we will see a further divide between poor and affluent blacks leaving the urban poor further alienated from power. If Barack continues to go to an historic black church that might help prevent this.
I definitely think that an Obama presidency would be seen very positively by people in other countries. It is a powerful statement against popular cynicism that the son of an immigrant can become president.
1 - for the better
2 - yes!
3 - a bit ironic, but doesn't really matter much.
